The structure you see below is being called the world’s first architectural structure built using only 3D printing. It may look small, but think about what this could mean for the future. I can only imagine what it would be like to live in a 3D printed house. Typically, since there aren’t 3D printers this size, this type of thing wouldn’t be possible yet.
However, this architectural structure wasn’t built using a massive 3D printer. Instead, the architects considered aggregation as the best construction system for this creation. It’s called Echoviren, and it looks more like a pavilion than anything else. It was just completed last weekend, and it was made from 585 individually printed pieces that were printed on seven Series 1 desktop printers by Type A Machines.
According to Dezeen, it took the printers two months and 10,800 hours to print the pieces, and four days to put it all together into this structure. One of the interesting things about this pavilion igloo-looking thing is that it was made from bio-plastic, so it will eventually decompose. It could take up to 50 years for that to happen, but someday, it will just be gone. In the meantime, the plants and animals in this redwood forest will be able to use it for their own little habitats.
This architectural structure was built by Stephanie Smith and Bryan Allen of Smith | Allen. There are many architects and designers who are working on creating the first actual house built from only 3D printing. There are several being made as we speak. It will be interesting to see what the first one looks like. Can you imagine being the first person to live in a house that was 3D printed? It’s coming…
