How Mobile Technology Has Revolutionized Marketing

Mobile technology has an impact on so much of our daily lives. Seemingly, there is an app for everything. Marketing is no different. The evolution of mobile technology has made it vital for brands and companies to plan their marketing strategies to account for this.

There are many different ways that they are doing this, and you should be making changes yourself, or else you may be missing a sizable portion of the market. 97% of residents in the United States own a mobile phone of some sort, making it the most important communication tool we have. Here’s how mobile technology has revolutionized the way that companies market their products.

Voice Search

One thing that has already started to change is now people search the internet. At the very beginning, users would search by pulling up web browsers and typing in search terms on a keyboard. As technology evolved, they could type in search terms on their devices through apps.

We are now, however, at a point where users don’t have to type in their search terms at all. Mobile technology has made it so that a user can pull out their phone and use voice commands to do a web search. They don’t even have to press any buttons or use their thumbs on the keypad.

How does this affect marketing? It turns out, it affects it in a significant way. The method of searching can change what search terms users tend to use. With a keyboard, users try to use as few words as possible to get the point across.

For example, they might type in “gadgets Atlanta” if they wanted to find out where to buy gadgets in Atlanta. Voice search simulates conversation, so a user is more likely to say “where can I find the best place to buy gadgets in Atlanta.”

This means that marketers need to take this into account when it comes to keyword research for search engine optimization (SEO). Keywords can no longer just be disjointed words or short phrases. They must be long tail, and often in the form of questions. That way you will be answering users’ questions, which search engine algorithms will recognize.

SMS Marketing

There is a mobile phone in the pocket or hand or bag of millions of people in this county. They are always at hand, even if a person isn’t using them. They are waiting for that alert to tell them they have a new message, text, tweet, or Instagram post to check out. We as a society are being conditioned to react to those notifications. As soon as they come, we pull out our phones and check them to see what it was. This is especially true for text notifications.

This makes text messaging an incredibly powerful tool for marketers. It is a medium that your audience is already conditioned to respond to almost immediately. That is a big reason for an open rate of almost 100% for text message marketing. Email and other methods cannot come close to matching this.

Text message marketing is still in its relative infancy. However, you can do some research to find some SMS marketing campaign ideas to get you started. SMS marketing is more immediate than any form of marketing, so it’s ideal for last-minute sales and offers, or even if you have inventory that’s running out.

More Data

Data is everything for a marketer. What data you have should affect the decisions you make for your marketing strategies on every level. This can include things like how many visits to your website turn into conversions, which pages are users clicking away from, and any number of things that will help you get a sense as to what is and isn’t working.

With mobile technology, marketers can now know more about their audiences and customers than ever before. They can get access to a customer’s interests, pain points, demographic information, and more. This can allow for crafting more effective messaging and content creation.

This means that marketers can treat the audience as individuals. There is no such thing as marketing materials that appeal to everyone. By having as much data as possible at your fingertips, you can create messages that are personalized to individual customers so that they are more effective and turn into conversions at a higher rate.

As you can see, any marketer must take mobile technology into consideration when developing a digital marketing strategy. In fact, not only must you do so in the present, but you also have to prepare for the future. The technology will continue to evolve over time, and our relationship to mobile phones and devices will evolve as well. To keep up and get ahead of your competition, make mobile optimization a priority for your marketing.
