The Remote Control Design That Will Make You Want To Watch TV Again

Although there have been a lot of new ideas published about how a more advanced television remote control might change our lives, none of them have caught on yet. Although we have seen small advancements in remote controls, for the most part, they still look and perform the same way now as they did years ago. Last year we featured a pretty sweet Next Gen Remote that was sleek and stylish, but I don’t think anything ever came of it. This is another high tech remote control design that would be great to try.

I don’t watch TV (except for The Walking Dead of course), but if I had this remote control, I might even be inspired to turn the television on a little more. The customizable touchscreen interface would allow the user to design the remote for his or her specific taste. According to Yanko Design, “Without interrupting what’s playing, users can search the guide, manage recordings, and access media directly from the 1136×640 resolution color display and even take photos or record video.”

This remote control design also comes with voice recognition, so it’s perfect for couch potatoes who don’t want to be bothered with actually reaching for the remote to change channels. This concept design is called Loupe, and it was created by designers (and students) Sarah Gao and Beata Patasiute. This was part of their semester long project at school, and you can click over to Sarah’s website to see how the whole idea evolved.

When creating this, they took into consideration that the older generation tends to watch more TV than the younger one. Therefore, it even has magnifying features to help that age group navigate and understand this newer technology. I hope this becomes a real product someday. Even if it doesn’t, I’m sure it will inspire other designers as they come up with new remote control designs for us all to drool over!
