If you are like me, you often times stumble onto blog posts that talk about the importance of unplugging. I used to roll my eyes when I read those. I consider myself to be an online junkie with complete control over my Internet and social media habit. After a while though, no matter how tough your body and mind are, it can start to takes its toll. I now believe that there is actually some merit in unplugging for a while every so often, but what I’ve found is that it’s a 2-step process.
My 2-step process isn’t based on any science, it’s just what I’ve found works for me. This is the logic behind it…I’ve found that if I only unplug, it doesn’t relieve the stress because I’m still constantly thinking about all the things I’m missing by not being online. That is why I had to add a second step to my process of unplugging. The second step is that I have to fill the time I would normally be online with an activity that inspires me and makes me feel creative.
If you’ve found that unplugging doesn’t work for you, and you only feel more stress by being out of touch, try adding that extra step. It might really help you like it’s helped me. This infographic might help you too. It’s called The Ultimate Guide To Unplugging (which was created by a collaboration between Greatist and whil – infographic graphics by Kim Steinhilber and text by Sophia Breene).
Apparently busy professionals who don’t see the value in unplugging can push themselves to the brink of burnout, which is why the team at whil created a 60-second meditation program specifically designed to help people with that problem. You can click over to their site for more information on that. In the meantime, just know that it’s okay to take a breather every once in a while. It doesn’t mean you are a slacker or you don’t care about your job, your fans or your followers. It just means you want to take care of yourself, and nobody can fault you for that. #truth
