The Internet is such a lifeline for many of us, and quite honestly, I don’t know how we ever survived without it. If I had to go a week without getting online once, I might die. I know lots of people who feel the same way. I might be able to go a day or two or maybe even three, but not much longer than that.
We’ve written many articles about the size of the Internet, how to measure the Internet, and how much information the Internet holds. We’ve even written about the weight of the Internet. Which do you think weighs more, you or the Internet? You can read about that at The Entire Internet Weighs As Much As A Strawberry.
However, have you ever thought about what happens on the Internet during a typical day? If you and I are on there all day doing this and that, how many other people are doing the same thing and what is the cumulative effect of all that activity? We know that there are more business opportunities online now than ever before. That’s not even to mention the mobile aspect of it all with regards to shopping and everyday purchases. In 2011 alone, e-commerce sales were somewhere around $680 billion dollars. On Black Friday, Amazon sold 32 things per second. That’s insane to me.
These days, everybody can reach everybody online. If someone doesn’t have some sort of social media profile or an email address, it’s almost as if they don’t exist, as strange as that sounds. MBA Online recently put together this infographic called A Day In The Internet. It highlights in a very detailed and specific way what happens on the Internet in a typical day. Can you believe that on any given day, there are enough blog posts written to fill a Time Magazine for 770 years? And, there are more iPhones sold on a single day than human babies born. Yeah, this is nuts. Enjoy!
