Superhero costumes have changed a lot over the years. I wasn’t alive when the first Batman and Robin television series ran from 1966 – 1968, but even many years later, there was usually a cable channel somewhere on the dial that was playing reruns of that show. The costumes that Batman and Robin wore back then wouldn’t look like superhero costumes by today’s standards. Today’s superhero costumes are shiny, sleek and sometimes overly flashy in my opinion.
Back in the old days, those costumes had a certain understated simplicity. They looked as if they were made of a much higher quality material, and there was just something about them that seemed strong and powerful, in a superhero kind of way. According to How To Be Retronaut, these costumes below are the original superhero costumes from the late 1960s and early 1970s.
One thing we rarely think about is that someone somewhere had to actually create what these costumes were going to look like before we had an image of Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman or Superman in our minds. Can you imagine being on the team of designers who created these from scratch? Their efforts were truly epic since these superheroes remain iconic even today. All of these costumes, especially the Wonder Woman one (of course, I’m biased) are truly timeless. Superheroes never go out of style, and I really like these images. They remind me of my childhood.
