This Mountain Dew Christmas Tree is such a holiday classic, and I hope it brings a smile to your face today. This morning I was on reddit (as usual), and I noticed a post on there getting a lot of attention right now. It’s a picture of a Christmas tree made out of Vault soda cans (remember Vault?). You can tell by the pictures that the method used to create that tree is the same as the classic, which went viral on email back in 2006. I got to feeling nostalgic and decided to write about the original today.
I remember specifically when this was circulating 5 years ago because it was one of those posts that taught me what the word “viral” means. Back then, it was much harder to get traction online, and email lists were huge. Email was the main source for sharing back then, and these pictures landed in my email several times. In 2006, Digg also started to gain a little popularity, and this was big on Digg also.
According to mdewtree (the official website), this tree was constructed for Christmas 2006. It was created with about 400 Mountain Dew cans. They used PVP pipe for the trunk, construction markers for the branches, and a drill to get the construction flags into the PVC pipe. It took 3 months to drink all the soda, and 4 days to build the tree. Wow!
I also found a post from several years ago on Pick Your Own Christmas Tree which details the Mountain Dew Christmas Tree tutorial in text which might be useful if you ever decide to make a tree out of soda cans for yourself. There is even a chart that shows how many cans to use depending on the desired height of the tree. It also goes on to chart how much time you should allow yourself to drink the soda in order to have enough cans by the time you want to start the building process. Dang!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this walk down memory lane. I know it’s been fun for me!
