Barbie & Ken If They Were Created Today [Photo Manipulation]

If you are a big Barbie doll fan, you probably know that it was in 1959 when the very first Barbie doll was introduced to the world. Barbie has gone through several transformations over the years, but one thing remains the same, she always looks beautiful and has great shoes (or at least that’s what I notice). According to Wikipedia, there are well over 100,000 Barbie collectors in the world, and each one of those collectors spends on average around $1,000 a year on Barbie dolls.

Have you ever stopped to wonder what a Barbie doll would look like if she was launched for the very first time in 2012? What if the world had no idea what a “Barbie doll” looked like, and what if she and Ken were just now introduced to everyone? What would they look like? What would be the new ideal that little girls would hold in the back of their minds as the perfect image? I have a feeling it would look nothing like it did back in 1959.

Hayden Wood, a photographer and creative retoucher, gives us a glimpse of what they might look like in his series called Living Dolls. You’ll never guess how he created these photographs though. He actually took pictures of real people and then used software to manipulate the photos so they look waxy and plastic – like dolls. This kind of skeeves me out, but I appreciate the art and creativity in it. If Barbie was created today for the first time, I hope she would look like this gorgeous Barbie with tattoos, pink hair and a spunky style. That Barbie went on sale last year for about a minute. There were only a few thousand made, and they were sold out in a flash. I can see why.
