It’s no secret that our oceans are polluted with trash. Plastic is the most common material found on our beaches. Misty did two massive beach clean-ups this year, and she confirmed that plastic was what they picked up the most. She even wrote an article about how we can turn discarded plastic into a personalized laptop case.
It’s always nice to see a big company make a difference in our environment. I remember reading about this plan back in June, and as of yesterday, it’s a reality. Electrolux, a company from Sweden that makes vacuum cleaners, announced their plight to raise awareness about plastic in the oceans through a campaign called “Vac from the Sea.”
Yesterday they released five vacuum cleaners, each created from plastic found in an ocean. These limited edition vacuums will be auctioned off and the money will be used to continue this project. Each of the vacuums you see below is made from plastic from a different ocean. The oceans represented are the Pacific Ocean, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Baltic Sea.
This project is a huge undertaking. Trained diving teams were assembled at each location. After the plastic was collected, it had to be sorted and cleaned. Then came the design itself. I think this is a brilliant initiative, and I wish these were sold commercially. I love how they look, and what they represent. I would buy one even if I had to pay a little more. By the way, I don’t even have any carpet in my house, I have all hard wood floors, but that’s not the point, right?
