All the artists we write about on Bit Rebels are impressive, otherwise we wouldn’t write about them. Each one has a unique style, and each artist we feature has his or her own special way of wowing others with insane skill and talent. However, as we have said before, there are some that just seem to stand out from the rest. These are the artists who don’t put a new spin on an old idea, but rather they come up with the idea itself. They are the pioneers of their craft, and we are all fortunate that they choose to share their creativity and vision with us all.
One such artist is Sergei Bobkov. He creates wild animals from wood chips. When I first saw these sculptures, I thought they looked cuddly and soft. I would have never guessed they were made from wood. Since over time, wood can get dried out and brittle, Sergei has created his own technique for treating it so it can be molded.
To make these, he first cuts hundreds of wood chips (2-3 inches long) from Siberian cedar. Then he takes groups of 150 chips and soaks them in water for several days to make them soft and moldable. Finally, he bends them as needed to put together these magical animals. It takes him about six months to complete one, and that’s with working 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. He’s created a total of 15 animals, and each one is very special to him. He has decided not to sell his art; instead, he does it for his own inspiration and enjoyment.
