I’ve often heard that if you want to know what a girl will look like when she gets older, look at her mother because she’ll look very similar. Do you think that is true? It isn’t true for me. My own mother is naturally stick thin with very curly black hair. I am not super skinny, and I have naturally very straight lighter colored hair. We look very different. My sisters and I look almost like twins though, so I can see that in some cases it could be true.
Which do you think is more prevalent in how our personal appearance is presented to the world… genetics or environment? It’s an intriguing question. We’ve featured a lot of photography posts on Bit Rebels with visual trickery, and this one is as interesting as the rest.
Photographer Jocelyn Allen (who is pictured in every one of these pictures) photographed herself with her closest relatives. She explored the idea that although we are genetically connected to the people in our family, which is very obvious in photographs like these, we still have individual characteristics that shine through. This collection is called “One is Not Like the Other,” and it’s currently being exhibited at the Guernsey Photography Festival.
