Woah! Enormous Sand Drawings On The Beach

It seems the beach inspires many artists. Since a lot of us grew up making sand castles, I suppose it only makes sense. After I saw the pictures in Richard’s article entitled 18 Astonishing Star Wars Sand Sculptures, I didn’t think I would see sand art again that would impress me. That is pretty much the pinnacle, or so I thought.

Sand artist Jamie Wardley and his team have been creating these humongous sand drawings on beaches all over the north of England and Scotland. Since we all know that the tide goes out, and then comes back in, and never stops, how exactly do they do it? Jamie answers that by saying, “Time is a big challenge when you’re working on the beach. You have about six hours from when the tide has gone out before it comes back in again.”

The drawings are designed to be viewed from a helicopter, cliff, tower or pier. He offers a tutorial at How to Make Sand Sculptures. However, I have a feeling it takes some practice before they look like this! He doesn’t mind that they will be gone once the tide comes in and washes the beach back to normal. After all, they aren’t meant to last forever. If you look really closely, you can see a person standing on the baby’s wrist in the Darth Vader picture below. See… I told you these things are huge!
