An Air Guitar Performance Like You’ve Never Seen Before

My friends and I used to play our air guitars all the time in the 80s. Back then, there was nothing quite like the exhilarating feeling that came from playing an air guitar to Guns N’ Roses or Def Leppard. Then when were were old enough to drive, it was all about playing the keyboard on the steering wheel to Van Halen. Someday I’ll have to ask Richard if playing these real instruments is more fun than playing air instruments. :)

In case you don’t know what playing an air guitar is, I will describe it for you. According to Wikipedia, “Playing air guitar is a form of dance and movement in which the performer pretends to play rock or heavy metal-style electric guitar, including riffs, solos, etc. Playing an air guitar usually consists of exaggerated strumming and picking motions and is often coupled with loud singing or lip-synching.” Oh yeah, baby!

I just learned today that there is a national and a worldwide Air Guitar Championship held each year. You can even view some of the people in the national Air Guitar Championships Hall of Fame. According to the Worldwide Air Guitar Championship website, “The purpose of the Air Guitar World Championships is to promote world peace. According to the ideology of the Air Guitar, wars would end, climate change stop and all bad things disappear, if all the people in the world played the Air Guitar.

Last weekend the U.S. National Air Guitar Championships were held in Chicago. Justin Howard (a.k.a. Nordic Thunder) won the contest and will now go on to compete in the worldwide competition. Other than the fact he completely ripped off Triple H’s signature water spitting move (how come nobody else has noticed that? Where are all the WWE fans?), this is the most impressive air guitar performance I’ve ever seen!
