In 2009, seven NASA astronauts flew on the now famous mission to rescue the Hubble Space Telescope. We’ve all heard astronauts describe such missions and seen the footage on television. I’ve dreamed about what it must be like to travel in space and float around weightless while seeing the grandeur of universe.
On March 19th, when IMAX Hubble 3D hits IMAX theaters, we will all be able to get as close as we’ve ever gotten before to actually feeling this experience. If you have never seen a movie in IMAX before, this will be a treat you will never forget. There are currently 320 IMAX theaters in the world, in 42 different countries. Typically, an IMAX movie screen is several stories large. Seeing a movie in an IMAX theater will blow your mind, but add to that 3D… I can’t even describe how cool this movie will be, I’m salivating.
I’m very impressed that a 700 pound IMAX 3D camera could even fly aboard the space shuttle in the first place. There is also footage from the cameras placed inside the helmets of the astronauts. According to http://www.popsci.com, “The very end of the film will showcase never before seen 3D tours of the cosmos that come courtesy of the repaired Hubble, a fly through of the Orion Nebula, and a truly epic voyage from our Milky Way galaxy all the way out to the edge of the observable universe.”
The caption on YouTube puts it best, “The film will offer an inspiring and unique look into the Hubble Space Telescopes legacy and highlight its profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves.” As if all this wasn’t good enough, this film is narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. I’ll be the first one in line getting tickets on March 19th for sure!
