Smurf Village: The Real Life Completely Blue Town

If you grew up in the ’80s like a lot of us did, you probably remember watching The Smurfs on Saturday mornings. I always loved that show (especially Papa Smurf and Smurfette), and of course, I begged my mother to buy me a Smurf lunchbox, a Smurf t-shirt and the Smurf cereal.

Since The Smurfs 3D movie is being released this month, we can all get our Smurf on once again. With people like Katy Perry, Hank Azaria and Jonathan Winters in it, I’m sure it will be a big hit for the little kiddies. The story line is the same as we all remember. Gargamel will be chasing the Smurfs all over the place, and I’m sure Papa Smurf will save the day with his words of wisdom at the very end.

In order to properly promote the movie, Sony decided to create a real Smurf village. They went on a hunt for the perfect location, and the town of Juzcar in southern Spain seemed like the ideal place. After all of the town’s 250 residents agreed to the plan, 12 local painters used 4,200 liters of blue paint to transform their town into a real Smurf village. All of the buildings, including the historic church and others, were painted Smurf blue. Even though the movie doesn’t premiere in the States until later in the month, the world premiere was yesterday, and it opened in Juzcar of course.

When all the movie promotion is over, Sony has agreed to return the town back to its normal colors. However, the residents are thinking about keeping it blue. Who knows, they might be able to make their tiny town a mini-tourist attraction. I love this color!
