Even though I’m not a designer, I’m still drawn to different kinds of typography. Seeing the way artists and designers create different letters and fonts is always inspiring to me. I’ve noticed that over the past few years, there has really been a division in what people consider typography to be. Some people have a very strict fundamental interpretation of what typography is, and they don’t deviate from that definition. Then other people, like me, might be a little more contemporary since I consider typography to be any sort of creative lettering. I think it’s like the yin and the yang, and both sides balance each other out well.
Artist Jing Zhang is known for his typography in his series called Letter, Letter, Letter. He just added nine new letters to his collection, so I thought this might be a fun time to share his art with you. He creates letters from the English alphabet (in no particular order) as if each one was a work in progress construction site. Since he calls this project “project forever ongoing,” maybe the construction sites themselves represent how he feels about the entire collection.
Each one of these letters is its own three-dimensional scene complete with staircases, little people, and all kinds of different tiny props. They are fun, whimsical and full of color. In some cases, the letters are an entire little ecosystem of life. You can learn more about Jing on Jing Zhang or see more of this collection on Behance.
