Design: The Little Blue Cozy Chair Created From Rope

I rarely write about furniture designs, not because I’m not interested in them, but because I don’t often find a piece that speaks to me. However, there is just something about this blue rope chair that I find really interesting. To me, it’s kind of like a fancy beanbag chair for adults, without the beans.

This innovative sculptured chair, created by Tom Price, was recently featured at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City. He recently wove five of these chairs together to create a blue rope bench, which now sits in the Paris Center of Fashion and Design.

According to the website, this chair was created “by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a ball of polypropylene rope. The rope begins to liquefy as it comes into contact with the heated former, and, as it cools, it sets in the shape of a seat creating a contrast in form and texture to the remaining rope.” In other words, this entire chair is made from melted rope. Tom also created other chairs using this same technique but with different materials. Together they form a series called the “Meltdown Series.” I would love to have one of these in my home.
