Dice Figures: Portraying The Human Body Using Only Dice

When I was a young boy and went to school like every other dedicated student, I used to play Dungeons & Dragons during the breaks. I was in a group of people who regularly got together to kick some butt. One of us was the dungeon master dealing us all what we could take. It was a magical time, and we tried to immerse ourselves in it as much as we possibly could even though we usually had a few bystanders check us all out while we were playing. I don’t think they understood very much about the game, but they sure followed us wherever we went. We never however got into the cosplay of things. I know there was some sort of community where I lived that was into all that, but the group of people was very small, and back then, we didn’t think much about it really.

It’s hard to say what really got me into all that playing, but I think it was a combination of adventurous undertakings and the many different kinds of dice that were continuously rolled out on the market. We had all kinds of dice back then, and we had a fascination for the shapes and forms I think. I mean, until I started playing D&D, I had only seen the 6 sided dice, which was quite ordinary.

So today, when pretty much everyone knows about role playing, there is of course an art side to it all as well. That side is definitely pioneered by artist Kim Hyun who I must say is one of the most brilliant minds I have seen when it comes to calculating patterns and adding it all up into portraits. I am talking about his critically acclaimed human figure entirely created out of dice. The time it must have taken to put that thing together is epic I’m sure. If you look at it, you will see that every dice is carefully aligned and glued to form the pattern Kim wants to create. That’s amazing considering you have to look at what has been added before, and what will be added next, in order to position the dice you’re currently fitting just right. It’s mind blowing art, isn’t it?!
