How To: Make Your Own Virtual Reality Glasses With Your Smartphone

Even though there hasn’t been a lot of progress made recently in the area of virtual reality, it can still be a lot of fun. Combining a simulated environment with a physical environment is still popular at arcades and game rooms everywhere. Wouldn’t it be fun to make your own virtual reality glasses? Even if you wouldn’t want to mess around with this yourself, I’m sure your kids would. The tutorial is super easy, and this would be the perfect geeky weekend project.

This was originally posted on POPSCI yesterday, and they took it from a book called The Big Book Of Hacks. All you need to make these virtual reality glasses are some safety goggles, a piece of cardboard, a pencil, a knife, some tape and your smartphone. Once you make these, you’ll be able to go anywhere Google Street View goes.

If you are looking for a more sophisticated virtual reality experience with your smartphone, there is an option for that also. It’s a head-mounted display created with military grade lenses. It even comes with a Bluetooth controller. You can read about that in an article Richard wrote last week called Fully Immersive iPhone Virtual Reality Head-Mounted Display.

If you decide to make these glasses, I’m sure anyone who sees you will think you are the king of the geeks, which is a good thing of course. The only problem I see with this is that you’ll have to take it apart to answer your phone. I think the idea of creating these virtual reality glasses with safety goggles is brilliantly simple. It makes me want to check out the other hacks in the book. If you’ve ever wanted to visit a place far, far away from the comfort of your own home, here’s your chance to do it!
