I remember about ten years ago when it seemed like everyone wanted to publish a book. So many people had it on their bucket lists, and somehow the topic always came up when I was talking to colleagues and clients back then. I remember speaking to Mark Victor Hansen about the whole experience at a conference several years ago. He is the co-author of the Chicken Soup For The Soul series, which has now sold well over 100 million copies in 54 languages. Back then, getting published was a big deal. Well, it’s still a big deal, but now there are also people who throw together an eBook in a few days, post it to the Internet, and call themselves published. So nowadays, there are a couple of different definitions for what it means to “publish a book.”
The recent success of Fifty Shades of Grey and the whole story behind the inspiration that E.L. James (Erika Leonard) had which motivated her to write that series has reignited the passion many people felt about writing a book. But how does a person go about getting published? How do you publish a book exactly? According to Writer’s Digest, this is one of the most common questions they’re asked. They put together this flowchart called How To Publish Your Book which goes through the steps in a very cute and humorous way.
When you are done giggling at this cheeky graphic, you can click over to Writer’s Market for some info about how to publish a book that is a bit more serious. Since I’ve written 2,855 articles here on Bit Rebels (as of today), I’m mostly accustomed to blogging, although I’ve definitely written enough words to compile a comprehensive book. Either way, I can certainly relate to the message this conveys which is that sometimes it’s hard to get any words typed on the blank page in front of you. I can tell you this from experience though – When the inspiration hits, you won’t be able to type fast enough to get all your ideas recorded. When that happens, just make sure you have your laptop handy. Those kind of days are the best!
