I love Star Trek doors. You don’t have to be a Trekkie to know which doors I’m talking about. I was trying to figure out today what it is about those doors that makes them so cool. I think a big aspect of it is the way they sound. That woooooooosh sound when it opens is so geeky, and it always puts a big smile on my face.
Wouldn’t it be a geek’s dream come true to have a Star Trek door installed in our bedroom? That is exactly what Marc DeVidts created for his own bedroom. It’s air-powered so it has that cool sound, which you can hear in the little video below. I already know that if I had this in my house, I wouldn’t want to stop there. I’d want to keep adding more Enterprise additions. How about a control panel in the bathroom and swivel Captain’s chair in the living room? Hmm….
Another aspect of this build that is really neat is that it looks like it is an actual interior door. It’s not a sloppy contraption. It looks sleek, like it’s part of the house. My only question is, what happens if it fails? Will I have to climb out my bedroom window to get out? I don’t care, it’s worth it. Humana held a contest on Instructables a few months ago, and Marc won a runner up award for this design. If you would like to make one of these doors for yourself, you can check out Mark’s short version of the directions on Instructables or his long detailed version on uiproductions. Great job!
