Be A Superhero: DIY Retro Wonder Woman Sweater

Wonder Woman is such a badass chick, and there’s no question she’s the best superhero of them all, at least to me. Whenever I see Wonder Woman inspired designs, they always catch my attention. I even picked out my swimsuit for next summer (which is here on Etsy), and yes, it’s Wonder Woman flavored. When I saw this DIY Wonder Woman sweater, I instantly fell in love with its retroness. It’s like Wonder Woman circa 1975 with a cozy twist.

There’s only one problem with this. In order to make it, I’d have to know how to knit. Yeah, that ain’t happening. I still wanted to bring it to all those knitting crafters out there who might be able to whip this badboy up for the upcoming winter months. This would make such a great gift for someone special. What could be more heartfelt than a hand-knit Wonder Woman sweater?

This timeless piece was originally created by Kirsty Lothian several years ago. Back in 2007, she posted the details including a pattern (which she calls a “recipe”) on Ravelry and Craftster. Both have different notes, so if you decide to make this, I would read recommend reading both of them. Five years ago on Craftster she wrote, “It took me 14 months to make, using 4ply wool, 3mm needles, a plain jumper pattern from the seventies, a ton of graph paper and pictures of Wonder Woman, and about a million bobbins for the intarsia.” Wow. That sounds like a labor of love if I’ve ever heard of one. All I know is that if I had one of these sweaters, I’d want to wear it everyday. You just can’t buy sweaters in stores that look like this. I found one on eBay, but it was so pitiful it wasn’t even worth linking to. Someday maybe I’ll learn how to knit…
