The Burning House: The Things People Would Save

There are events in everyone’s life that we would rather not live through, and if we had a remote control a la the movie Click!, I am sure we would use it more than once through the course of our lives. However, some things are of course good for experience, and without them, we would continuously stumble in the dark and make the same mistakes over and over again.

When the accidents occur, we are left needing to make quick decisions that need to be correct since they cannot be undone once the choice has been made. Such a situation can occur when, for example, you are subject to a house fire. It’s a horrible thing to happen to anyone, but sometimes that’s just what happens.

There is a really cool project called “The Burning House” that continuously asks a bunch of people what they would save if their house suddenly caught on fire. The answers are quite different, and you can follow a certain red line through the many compilations of things based on age, gender, etc. The cool thing is that everything is carefully documented, and for each answer there is an image that comes with it along with a bunch of facts for the person who gave the answer.

Since it is an ongoing project, there is always something new being added. If you go to the site several times each week, you should be able to see many new entries that have been uploaded to the site. It’s quite interesting to see what people love the most, and if you would compare it to your own list (if you make one prior to checking the entries out), you will find that everyone is different. What you would leave behind in a heartbeat someone would go out of their way to save. Those are the peculiar differences between us humans, we all love different things, and we should all be happy for that. There are countless more compilations on The Burning House project website.
