Do: Stay Hydrated

You need to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated all the time. Experts recommend drinking 1.5 to 2 liters or 6 to 8 glasses of water every day for basic health and also for your voice. Ten glasses would be optimal. Providing enough moisture to your vocal cords can keep the mucosal lubrication around it intact. It’s necessary to keep a cover around your chords with a thin layer as it ensures a better sound quality. Other options to retain water level in your body is to drink green or herbal tea or eat fruits with high water content.

Don’t: Consume Dehydrating Food And Drinks

Alcohol can be your worst enemy as a singer. It dehydrates your body and irritates your throat. Any beer, wine or liquor can cause your larynx and lined mucous membranes to get irritated due to dryness, which can cause harshness in your voice. You should also stay away from caffeinated products and carbonated drinks as they cause dryness and dehydration as well. Other dehydrating agents include medicines such as diuretics, antihistamines, similar allergy medications, and cough drops that are made of menthol or any other artificial flavor.

Do: Follow A Healthy Diet And Lifestyle

A healthy diet promotes better health and voice quality. It primarily requires you to eliminate all spicy and oily food items that can cause hoarseness in your voice. It can also prevent acid reflux and mucus secretion in your throat that is worse. Fill up more on veggies and fruits, healthy grains, and low-calorie snacks.

Eliminate sugary food items like chocolates, full-fat dairy like cream, and milk. Incorporate this into your lifestyle and you’ll thank yourself after noticing the difference in a few weeks. Your health will improve, you’ll lose weight and your voice will be clearer. It’s a win-win situation.

Don’t: Yell And Shout

Shouting and yelling are undesirable behavioral actions in the first place. To top it, it can ruin your voice. Instead of speaking from your throat, use your diaphragm as it will induce less stress on it. Shouting can cause itchiness and produce a coarse texture when you speak or sing. That’s the last thing you want. Speak softly and use a microphone if you’re inaudible.

Whether you’re sick or well, near or far, adjust your situation and position to speak as low as possible. It not only protects your voice but also show good etiquette. Try not to whisper as well as it requires passing air through the vocal cords.

Do: Practice Warm-Ups

Before any major performance or training, it’s important that you warm up your voice to clear it to its full potential and to open it up. You can either talk on the phone for a few minutes or practice a few voice singing techniques like trilling, switching between scales, and humming. Repeat the song multiple times to understand how you sound in every critical part of the composition. It’s also important to take vocal breaks over specific intervals when you’re done.

Don’t: Smoke

It’s the worst thing you can do to your body and voice, combined. Smoking can cause irritation to the lined mucus in your throat due to its chemical releases, heat, and smoke. A serious health issue called chronic laryngitis or vocal fold polyps can be caused due to the irritation, putting your health and singing to stake. Quit smoking to stay away from its dangerous repercussions.

If you’re gifted with this talent of a beautiful voice, you should protect it at all costs. Some of these tips are extremely easy to follow; you just need some will power and patience to enhance your voice quality and to maintain it.
