The Expressive History Of Color Broken Down By Decade [Infographic]

Color affects so much of our behavior and how we feel online and offline. We have probably written a dozen articles about the psychology behind colors and how they can be the catalyst for certain actions, feelings and attitudes. Colors can affect how a brand is perceived when it comes to trust and reliability. One of the fascinating aspects of color is that it can be trendy or dated. Colors can signify a moment in time, or in this case, a decade. This is the history of color as presented by Pantone.

In celebration of their 50th anniversary, Pantone created this infographic below called Celebrate Color. It’s a history of color that spans from the 1960s all the way up until today. It shows the colors that were trendy in each decade, along with a few details about each decade which may have inspired the colors.

After checking out the history of color throughout the past several decades, you’ll even get to see Pantone’s color of the year for 2013 (which is a gorgeous color). Pantone has been presenting their ‘color of the year’ since 2000, and when you look at all of the colors from previous years, it can really give you an injection of nostalgia.

I never thought of social media as portraying a popular color, but you’ll get a glimpse of that too. The history of color and what that represents is a huge part of who we are as a society. Color is everywhere, and if you look around right now, you can probably see tons of different colors. What is your favorite color? What is your brand’s color? The colors you are attracted to conveys clues about your own personality. If you want to read more about this, click over to What Your Logo & Website Colors Say About Your Brand.
