Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva & Timur Tillyaev Support UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital

Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva and her husband, businessman Timur Tillyaev, have a history of philanthropy going back almost two decades. Originally from Uzbekistan the couple are these days based in LA. On seeing how COVID was devastating the local community they were quick to act.

As the President of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hospital System explained, “We were facing a shortage of face shields for our front-line healthcare workers, and thanks to the kindness and generosity of the Tillyaev Family, UCLA was able to secure enough shields to equip our entire patient-facing workforce.”

For health workers and patients alike this kind of assistance was greatly appreciated. Preventing new infections is one of the most effective means of fighting the pandemic. The couple have also decided to make their relationship with the facility more permanent.

Timur Tillyaev has recently joined the board at the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. In Johnese Spisso’s words, MPA, and president of UCLA Health and CEO of the UCLA Hosptial System, “Tim’s dedication to improving the health of children globally is truly admirable, and we are grateful to have his leadership, active participation, and philanthropic support.”

Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev´s first major involvement of this kind was in 2002 when they launched the You Are Not Alone foundation. Based in their native Uzbekistan, the NGO continues to provide support for children born into disadvantage. Originally, You Are Not Alone funded refurbishments to existing facilities and provided new equipment.

As time went on and the couple´s expertise grew they were able to expand the scope of their programs. Today the organization designs and constructs entire, purpose-built new centers. What has remained unchanged is their founding goal – “to ensure that vulnerable children grow up in a caring and loving environment.”

You Are Not Alone is also contributing to the education and health care of underprivileged Uzbeks. One program supports struggling families to ensure economic hardship doesn´t force youngsters to abandon their education. For stand-out students, Lola Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev ensure they have the means to study at the best university whether that be inside the country or beyond.

As Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva explains, “Education is at the heart of everything the You Are Not Alone foundation does.” The foundation has also come to the aid of several hospitals and clinics in Uzbekistan, much as they did in LA. For instance, on hearing about shortages at the State Perinatal Centre in Tashkent they provided a range of new pieces of equipment such as x-ray machines and cardiac monitors.

This led to a dramatic improvement in patient care. As Timur Tillyaev explained, “for the past two decades my wife and I have been involved in various charity projects in Uzbekistan and internationally to support the vulnerable and to support initiatives that help people.”

In this way, the almost twenty years of experience Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva and Timur Tillyaev have gained from helping their fellow countrymen overseas is now being applied to their new home of California.
