The Most Common Types Of Car Accidents

Car accidents are an unfortunate possibility for any driver who takes to the road. Every day hundreds of them occur across the country, causing all manner of problems not just for those involved in the accident, but for their fellow commuters as well. For those involved in a car accident, the consequences are immediate and can be severe; they might involve serious vehicle damage or severe injuries.

For everyone else on the road, the ensuing gridlock can cause stress, missed work, and missed appointments. There are many different kinds of car accidents, some more serious than others. If you are ever in any type of car accident and are from the Orlando area, then call 1800injured.care to get the legal help you need.

Rear-End Collisions

These occur when a driver runs into the back of the car in front of them. These accidents are usually caused when the driver who caused the collision was not paying attention to the road and did not realize that the driver ahead of them had stopped or slowed down.

It can also be caused by tailgating, which is when a driver is following the car ahead of them too closely. That can prevent them from being able to react in time if the driver ahead needs to stop or slow down suddenly.

Fortunately, rear-end collisions are among the less severe kind of auto accident because they usually occur at fairly low speeds. Plus the rear and front of each car feature crumple zones that absorb a lot of the impact. Nonetheless, injuries—usually whiplash—can happen and both cars will need to be repaired.

T-Bone Collisions

Also called side-impact collisions, this is when the front of one car slams into the side of another. This type of accident can be especially devastating to the occupants of the vehicle that suffered the impact, particularly if they were sitting on the side that was struck. That is because there are no crumple zones on the side that can absorb the impact, so the majority of the force gets transferred into the driver or passenger compartments.

If the speed of the crashing vehicle is fast enough, the injuries to the occupants of the impacted vehicle can be severe, life-threatening, or even fatal. The damage to the vehicle is likely to be quite serious as well. Many vehicles have side-impact airbags, but, at best, they can only slightly mitigate any potential injuries.

Head-On Collisions

This is when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions run into each other. It can also refer to when a vehicle plows into a stationary object like a wall or a tree. These are among the most serious type of car accident because, when two vehicles are involved, their relative velocity is increased.

This means that if both vehicles collide while traveling at 40 MPH, that is the equivalent of either vehicle running into a stationary object at 80 MPH. Even with the protection of crumple zones, seatbelts, and airbags, a head-on collision can cause serious injuries.

Lane Change Collisions

These occur when a vehicle changes lanes without first checking to see if the lane is clear. This can cause sideswipe accidents, which is when two cars going in the same direction brush up against each other.

Sometimes this can lead to a second collision where one or more of the cars collide with another car or with a stationary object. Head-on collisions are a subset of lane change collisions when they occur on a two-lane road where the two vehicles are traveling in opposite directions.

Multi-Vehicle Collisions

Also called multi-car collisions or pileups, these occur on high capacity, high-speed roadways such as freeways and highways. The causes are numerous but the results are always devastating because many of the vehicles involved can experience multiple collisions and survivors can get trapped in their vehicles. Additionally, if there is a fire, then it can spread to other vehicles, making the situation even more chaotic and dangerous.

Be Careful On The Roads

No one wants to be involved in a car accident. Even a minor one with minimal vehicle damage and no injuries can be inconvenient. The best way to avoid a car accident is to be a responsible driver and exercise due diligence and caution when you drive. If you do end up in an accident, then you should consult with an experienced car accident attorney to get the legal help you need.
