I can’t stop laughing over this, and the ironic thing is, I don’t think it’s intended to be funny. When you were young, did you ever know those little girls who would swing their Barbie dolls around by the hair or pull their arms out of their little plastic sockets? I did, and I always thought those girls were evil. If a girl ever came to my house and did that, she would never get an invitation to come back and play, and she sure as hell wouldn’t get her hands on any of my special Barbies.
Since then, I’ve grown up and grown annoyed with the whole perfect Barbie doll image and everything it represents. When I saw a Barbie doll at the store with a boob job about a year ago, it all came to a head, and I started writing posts that show her in more unflattering ways instead of the can-do-no-wrong princess she always appears to be. I’ve written about Barbie as a serial killer, a whore and a drug addict. I’ve even written about jewelry created from her body parts. However, this definitely takes the cake in a much more subtle way.
These are mummified Barbies who are turned into mummies with beeswax, twine and silver chrome flakes. Artist E.V. Day says they represent how American female culture is obsessed with preserving beauty through whatever means necessary. These are playful and fun, and I definitely want one. Too bad they cost $3,500 each. If you’ve got that kind of dough to drop on a Barbie doll, you can buy one at Grey Area.
