Alternative ways to create energy are always welcomed, and lately it seems like the bicycle is getting a lot of attention. I’ve read several articles lately about pedal power, and how it can do things we’ve probably never thought about before. Just a few days ago we even featured a startup that has created a way to charge smartphones with pedal power. Today it’s about something more delicious than a smartphone though. This is about ice cream that is churned by pedaling a bicycle.
This isn’t just an idea or a one-time experiment. There is actually an ice cream store in downtown L.A. that only serves ice cream that has been pedal powered to perfection by human beings. It’s called Peddler’s Creamery.
This ice cream store uses an old Schwinn bike mounted on rollers. So, how long does it take to process ice cream using pedal power? The answer to that question depends on how fast you’re pedaling. It takes 3-4 miles of pedaling to freeze a 5-gallon tub. If you are pedaling fast, you can whip that up in about 15 minutes. The creamery keeps their freezers stocked with this ice cream, so there is no wait when people come in to order it. They even allow their customers to hop on a bike and churn some ice cream themselves.
This is such a great idea for so many reasons. Enjoying an ice cream cone is something that is synonymous with slowing down and taking a break. Churning it via pedal power is a refreshing and relaxing change from any fast-paced high tech ice cream processing method. Also though, it makes you stop and think about all the other things that could possibly be powered by pedaling a bicycle. It’s inspiring!
