Do you ever walk down the sidewalk only to stop along the way, which annoys everyone around you? If you live in a touristy city, you know exactly what I mean. Tourists suddenly stop all the time to snap pictures everywhere they go. If you do that crap in New York City, people won’t be politely annoyed like they are here in the South. In NYC, especially in Manhattan, they will just plum run over your ass. I call the walkers in NYC professional walkers. They don’t mess around. You either gotta keep up with the walking traffic or get out of the way. Maybe I just think that because I’ve lived in Atlanta so long that I’m not used to that fast pace.
Although I don’t stop much while walking on the sidewalk, I often stop at other very inappropriate times so I can type on my iPhone. I can’t help it, I love to tweet, and I’m constantly on my phone tweeting. Whether I’m holding up the line at the supermarket, the bank or the post office, I get annoyed looks from people all the time about it. My Twitter friends are more important to me than those random strangers, so I really don’t care. I usually just smile and keep doing what I’m doing.
Photographer Joe Holmes is very interested in how people get lost in their own worlds when they are typing away on their smartphone in public. He was so fascinated by it that he started a project called “Texters,” which is full of photographs of people texting while walking down the street, while sitting in cafes, and while just hanging out outside. Interestingly enough, Joe is from New York City, and I wonder if that is where these photos were taken. You can view the entire collection on flickr. I still say these people look waaaaaay to happy to just be texting. I think they’re tweeting. :)
