Pickpocketing With Chopsticks: The Trendy Way To Steal A Smartphone

I’ve heard of creative pickpocketing techniques to steal smartphones, but this is the first I’ve heard of pickpocketing a smartphone via chopsticks. It turns out, this isn’t the first time smartphones have been snagged using chopsticks. There was a news story in 2011 involving the same smartphone heist. As you see in the pictures below, it’s quite a crafty way to steal someone’s phone.

This particular pickpocketing scheme has a twist though. The thief was able to steal her phone (with chopsticks) while the victim was riding a bike. Now that requires skill. This crime took place in China last week. The thief ran alongside the bike and carefully put his chopsticks right into the victim’s pocket and removed her smartphone, all without her knowing what was happening.

Luckily, a bystander was able to capture the whole thing on video, which ultimately led to his arrest. He turned himself into police last Tuesday after seeing his face on the news. See that other guy cycling beside her? Why didn’t he notice what was happening? It’s not everyday you see someone jogging to keep up with the woman riding a bike next to you.

I have to admit, out of all the pickpocketing schemes I’ve seen, this one is definitely the most creative. Just remember, if your smartphone is exposed in any way, it is not safe. That even includes when it’s in your pocket while you’re riding you bike.

The funny thing is, so many people have trouble eating food with chopsticks (at least here in the States). Can you imagine being able to manipulate them well enough to steal someone’s smartphone in these conditions? In the end, this thief said he commits crimes to help support his daughter. One this is for sure, he’s definitely got guts.
