Can you believe our beloved Twitter is five years old? I remember when she was just a newborn, and we all nervously embraced her. The future of Twitter was unknown at that time, but we were adventurous. Little did we know how she would completely change our lives. She certainly didn’t disappoint us, and now, several years later, she’s evolved into a dominant force to be reckoned with. They just grow up so fast, don’t they?
I’ve sent a hella lot of tweets (80,000), and I’ve loved every minute of it. Empire Avenue is great, Google+ has a lot of possibilities, but none of the new social media sites that pop up here and there will ever truly replace Twitter for me. She’ll always hold a very special place in my heart, and in the hearts of Twitterholics around the world.
Sometimes it’s hard to grasp how fast Twitter has grown. Let me try to put it into perspective for you. Back in March of 2010, I wrote this article celebrating Twitter’s 10 billionth tweet. In other words, it took Twitter a few years to reach 10 billion tweets. However, as of this month, there are now over 200 million tweets sent on Twitter each day. Some claim the number is much higher. That is absolutely mind-blowing to me. To celebrate Twitter’s 5th birthday, the people over at Visually created this infographic which illustrates exactly how our Twitter has grown over the past five years. These milestones bring back so many memories. I remember the first time I ever saw the fail whale. All together now…. Awwwww :)
