Twitter’s Effect On Offline Relationship Longevity

If you are a Twitter addict like me, you are used to being judged, right? People in our offline worlds are constantly making ridiculous claims about how it’s not good to tweet so much, we are alienating ourselves for the “real world,” yada yada yada. For me, Twitter is my “real world,” and I have learned to just giggle at people who think they know what is better for me than I do.

However, have you ever stopped to think for even a moment whether or not our tweeting ways actually affect our relationships? I mean, we all know that we suffer from short attention spans, and we think in 140 characters at a time, but I mean, have you really thought about it?

There is a dating site called OkCupid which has 7 million active members. OkTrends is a research firm that takes information from the members at OkCupid and forms statics, graphs, etc… Yesterday, they published an article with 10 charts about sex and relationship related stuff. It’s fascinating, and a hilarious read. Some of the information they gathered had to do with active Twitter users. The first chart you see below is about relationship longevity. This is based on information provided by 833,987 OkCupid users. As you see, frequent Twitter users have shorter offline relationships than non-Twitter users. However, in our defense, they aren’t that much shorter, so gimme a break, right?

The second chart has to do with the forbidden “M” word. This one is only based on information from 21,315 OkCupid members ages 18-24. So to me, this one is more fun than factual. I have my own opinion about this particular topic, but since we try to keep our blog PG, I’ll keep that to myself. *wink* Bottom line, this doesn’t really prove anything more than we knew before we saw it. The world is and always will be the way we perceive it. I love my Twitter friends dearly, and I can’t think of anything in the world that would keep me from tweeting everyday!
