When I first heard about Google Glass and some of the other wearable tech creations that have become popular lately, one of the first things I started thinking about was how cool it would be to be able to easily write texts, tweets and emails without having to use a keyboard or other cumbersome piece of tech. We’ve all thought about that, right? Since all communication in general is going in the direction of data (instead of voice), it would be great to type as naturally as we talk. This could be solved with air-writing.
The scientists at the Karisruhe Institute of Technology in Germany have put a lot of thought into this too, and they’ve figured out a way to allow people to type via air-writing with gesture control. What a brilliant idea! This could change everything. I mean, we all do some air-writing every once in a while. Whether it’s to spell a word or do a math problem, air-writing is already more popular than you might think.
Just a few days ago, we featured a 3D Gesture Control Armband (which is not a future technology, it’s available now) that pretty much allows you to control any device with gesture controls. This is similar to that. According to Popsci, this is a “thin glove-like wristband that is equipped with acceleration sensors and gyroscopes like those already found in a cell phone. It recognizes handwriting movements and transmits them to a computer with a wireless signal.” In other words, the wristband takes your air-writing and puts it into any mobile device in the form of typed letters.
This air-writing system can currently recognize 8,000 words, and it’s sophisticated enough to recognize different styles of lettering. Currently, all this can be done while wearing the glove. In the future though, these researchers hope to be able to incorporate this into smartphones so we can do our air-writing with our smartphones – which would eliminate the need for the glove. It’s things like this that make technology so exciting! I suppose it’s time to brush up on those handwriting skills. So, which is faster, your air-writing or your typing?
