Brain Interface Headset: 3D Printed Object Created With Brain Waves

Brain computer interfaces are becoming more popular, and it seems like lately I’ve written about all kinds of techie stuff people are doing by just utilizing their brain waves. The human brain is fascinating, and we are just starting to scratch the surface when it comes to what’s possible when using our brains. Now the magic of our minds has seeped into the world of 3D printing. A new brain interface headset allowed this orange object to be created by using only brain waves.

This object you see (I don’t know what it’s supposed to be) was 3D printed on May 8th, 2013 with the brain waves of Thinker Thing‘s CTO George Lakowsky. Thinker Thing is a company that combines BCI tech and 3D printing tech to create objects with brain waves, and this is the first time it was successful.

Thinker Thing used a brain interface headset called an Emotive EPOC to bridge the gap between the 3D printer and the mind. Even though this orange object is super simple, it represents groundbreaking progress in discovering how the brain relates to computers, and ultimately 3D printing.

Bryan Salt, Thinker Things founder, said, “George was able to control an evolutionary process that grows a 3D object using the small electrical impulses detectable in the brain. This evolving model is created in a form that can be read by the latest 3D printers, which allows us to create real physical objects directly by your mind.”

There are so many applications for this type of technology, and it’s exciting that this will open new opportunities for creative people around the world.
