How To Choose The Right Home Security Camera

As technology continues to improve, security products continue to go down in price. For example, a home security camera is now realistically available to any homeowner at a decent price. But do you know what you’re shopping for? Just because every camera captures video doesn’t mean they’re all created equal.

5 Tips For Choosing The Right Camera

Looking for a home security camera can be a little intimidating. There are so many different devices on the market, such as the popular doorbell camera, and they all seem to do different things. As you search for the right one, here are a few tips that should help you narrow down your choices.

1. Consider Your Needs

What purpose is your security camera serving? Are you simply trying to deter crime by having a camera visible to would-be intruders? Or are you actually trying to capture footage that could help solve a crime if one takes place? There are dozens of different reasons why people purchase security cameras and your exact reasoning will determine which type of camera you need.

2. Wired Versus Wireless

One of the first things you have to decide is whether you want a wireless camera that runs through Wi-Fi or a wired camera that pushes video to a physical receiver that can then be viewed by a connected device. Both have their pros and cons, so be sure to do your research on this topic. A lot of people prefer the wired kind, even though they usually require professional installation and cutting through drywall. There’s more reliability and less risk of being compromised.

3. Camera Functionality

Each type of camera serves a different purpose. If you’re looking for a camera that can go in a garage and cover every square inch of the room, then you probably need a dome camera. If you’re trying to hide a camera so that nobody can detect it, then you’ll need a hidden camera. If you don’t care about the camera being hidden, but want one that spans the entire width of your property, a wide-angled lens is necessary. Think through these details so you find a camera that’s functional for your needs.

4. Consider The Camera’s Security Firewall

Ironically enough, a lot of wireless cameras don’t have a firewall built into them. This allows hackers to come in and compromise the video feed and exploit your home security solution. When shopping around for cameras, you have to give this some consideration.

Do some Google searches on the system you’re considering. You might be surprised by what you find,” security advisor Roger Grimes says. “Most security cameras run on nondefault ports that are well documented and known by attackers. It allows them to scan the Internet, look for those ports to find the cameras, then use their tricks to exploit your devices.

5. Know Where To Buy

Last, but certainly not least, you have to think about who you’re going to buy from. There are lots of different vendors available both online and offline. The key is to choose a vendor that offers a variety of brands and stands behind their products. The last thing you can afford to do is invest in a home security camera, have it break, and then be unable to get the support you need.

Have Some Patience

While you certainly want to get a camera up as soon as possible in order to keep your family safe and protect your property, don’t rush so fast that you make a bad decision. Have a little patience and do your research. Once you learn all of the terminologies and get to know the various features that different cameras have, you can make a much smarter choice that will satisfy your needs for years to come.
