Computer History Timeline: When It Will All End [Infographic]

The pace at which computers get updated is getting faster and faster. We are no longer impressed by the giant leaps humanity sometimes takes when it come to technology. Even though we continuously invent new ways to speed up, make smaller, and refine already existing technology, it looks like we are about to reach the end of processor speeds by the end of 2023. Some people don’t feel too worried about it, but should we be?

The fact is that if everything stays on course, the microchips will get too small to hold the electrons that determine the processor speed. So what will happen when we have reached this limit? Will there be some kind of new technology that will take its place and further increase processor speeds?

Of course that is a hard question to answer, but some people say that in 12 years, there will definitely be new technologies available that will help us to further advance. Some people are quite interested in this historical timeline, and they have been collecting information to create a really cool and stunningly knowledgeable infographic. Those people are the brilliant minds of Online Computer Science Degree.

The infographic in itself might be a little sparse when it comes to graphics, but the content and information on it will have you glued to the screen in no time. I have been looking at it and taking everything in for about ten minutes now, and I still find new stuff that is stunningly interesting. The most interesting bits of information on this infographic are that scientists say that for the last 15 years the increase in computer performance has little to do with the technology advances. It’s mainly been the way algorithms have been refined and rewritten. That is quite an inspiration. I would love to know what one of the most brilliant computer software programmers would be able to do with the chip in the legendary Commodore 64 today. That could actually be a really cool challenge, don’t you think?
