There have been so many interesting camera concept designs over the past few years, but this DUO camera stands out from the rest. It’s based on the interesting concept that combines a traditional photo with a ‘selfie.’ Selfie photos became super popular in 2012, and you won’t have to look far in your Twitter stream or Facebook feed to see a selfie portrait (like the famous mirror shot).
People love taking photos of themselves and sharing them, and this camera (which breaks apart) takes those photos to a new level. The way this DUO camera works is simple. You just break it apart into two pieces for two people. The cameras have synchronized triggers. This means that each time one picture is taken, there is a picture taken by the other camera also. Every photo is really two photos, which is one selfie and one regular photo.
This binary camera concept was developed by Chin-Wei Liao. He points out that even though selfies have gotten popular, there are still a lot of people who are uncomfortable having their photo taken. According to his website, “Inspired by the fact that many people feel uncomfortable being photographed or do not like seeing their self-images, this project explored the meaningful impact of self-image and ways of encouraging people to enjoy taking photos.”
There is no word on whether or not this DUO camera will ever be mass produced, but if it is, it would be such an interesting photography experience! It’s completely unlike any other camera concept I’ve seen, and I’m sure a lot of people would have fun with it. It creates an all-inclusive photo, which would add another layer of engagement and memories at any social event (like wedding receptions or birthday parties).
