Who here remembers the Nintendo 64? Children of the 90s, let’s hear you sound off! Developed at a time when video games were truly hitting their stride for the first time, it’s regarded by quite a few folks as Nintendo’s masterwork, and it is hailed and beloved even to this day.
I still play mine regularly, even though I’ve got pretty much every new gaming gadget out there. There’s just something magical about it that modern games simply haven’t yet been able to capture.
As it turns out, a fellow by the name of Slipstream (unfortunately, no one quite knows what his real name is) on the Modded By Bacteria forums came up with a pretty awesome idea back in November- why not make a handheld version of the Nintendo 64?
I’m assuming he used the term “handheld” lightly here. While the Electus 64 is certainly portable, it’s by no means small. The Electus clocks in at a staggering 5.75 inches wide, 7.75 inches long and 1.75 inches thick. That’s as long as the original Nintendo 64 controller, and just an inch shy of being as wide as a PSP. On the plus side, it also features a 4.3 inch screen that supports both 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, and the ability to plug it in to your TV if you want something a little bigger.
The case itself is gorgeous, as you can tell from the images provided below, and the control layout is actually a considerable improvement on the rather clunky, sometimes-awkward controllers of the Nintendo 64. The only thing I’m not completely sold on is the manner by which games are plugged into the system- but that’s a minor gripe when one considers everything else about the Electus is pretty much to die for.
On the technical side, it’s…well, it’s a Nintendo 64, except it’s portable. That’s pretty much it. According to Technabob, the battery’s only good for about three hours of gameplay- but the Electus comes complete with a charger and a car adapter for long road trips and hotel visits.
Slipstream sold the mod on Ebay for a whopping $995, on the account ZeusnPanda. Keep an eye on that account- I’m sure he’ll provide a few more epic mods in the very near future.
