High Tech Disposable Diapers Help Parents Track Their Baby’s Health

It’s hard to believe that back in the old days, there was no such thing as disposable diapers. Parents had to use pieces of cloth and safety pins. Then diapers evolved into being disposable, and now it seems they’re evolving again. These are Smart Diapers, and they are embedded with QR codes. When a baby urinates, his or her pee can be analyzed with the help of an iPhone app. The analysis tracks aspects of the baby’s health. What an ingenious idea.

The way these diapers work is simple. You just scan the wet QR code with your smartphone once a day. Once your scan is analyzed, you will be alerted if there are any signs of a urinary tract infection, dehydration, kidney problems or Type 1 Diabetes. Urinary tract infections can develop into a more serious illness, and at any given time, 8% of babies have them.

Once these diapers are further developed, they are expected to track other health concerns also. They were created to be completely safe, and the QR code never touches the baby’s skin. The data collected can be tracked for the entire time your child wears diapers, which allows the app to track the information over time, revealing any concerning trends.

These smart disposable diapers were created by a startup called Pixie Scientific. These diapers are expected to cost about 30% more than traditional disposable diapers when they retail. Pixie Scientific is currently seeking funding to finalize their innovation. They hope to raise $225,000 here on Indigogo. At the time I’m writing this, there is 57 days left in the campaign and they’ve raised a little over $10,000. These are such a great idea, and if I had a baby, I would definitely want to use them!
