I think that every seasoned graphic designer out there will agree with me when I say that the greatest line of software after Photoshop ever to grace a designer’s desktop is actually the 3D software. Not only does it allow you to create some rather fantastic artwork within your organic design, but it will also allow you to render the textured creations from any direction. I am a huge fan of Lightwave 3D and play around with it whenever I have time. It has brought me a greater understanding of angles and even allowed my skills in Photoshop to evolve beyond what I thought was possible. 3D software is good for a lot of things, and that is exactly what is going to be showcased in this article.
Digital artist Jeremy Kool (badass name by the way!) has been playing around with the idea of creating origami the digital way. The result is some truly awesome digital origami animals, which he is about to turn into a 3D movie that will beat any paper folded origami by about a million miles. It is a clear look at what the digital software we are using today is capable of helping us create. With just a few settings, and a click on the “render” button, the lighting and shadows are added to realistically puncture our own reality.
It’s great to see that an analog and organic art form like origami is finally being brought into the digital age. I hardly think we will see a huge shift in people abandoning paper origami for this, but it certainly strikes a chord with me. It’s not only inspiring, but it also splashes a bit of ingenuity into a digital graphic genre that we haven’t seen before. There’s no doubt it takes a long time to make these awesome creations with polygons, textures, lighting and shadows. However, the result is as I always say, nothing less than amazing!
