When I was a child, I had an art teacher once who used to always tell us, “In art, there are no such things as mistakes, only happy accidents.” I always remembered that my whole life. I think it’s a great attitude and simple philosophy to remember when applied to any form of creativity. If we adopt the mindset that there is no such thing as a mistake, it opens the floodgates in our thoughts, and we realize the possibilities are endless.
This seemingly innocent plain white tablecloth reminds me of that teacher. It is the perfect tablecloth for creatively messy artists, and it waits patiently for the ultimate spill of paint, wine, juice, or any colored liquid. When something gets dumped over, it’s not a mistake, but rather a happy accident because suddenly a new artwork appears as the colors seep through the patterns on the tablecloth creating a beautiful visual instead of an ugly stain.
This would also be fun at a dinner party where something always seems to inevitably get spilled. Instead of the host running to grab a towel, everyone can enjoy watching the new patterns emerge. I am very messy; I admit it. I need about five of these tablecloths in my house! Designer Kristine Bjaadal says it turns spills into poetry. I like this a lot!
