I have seen lots of stone sculptures over the years, but I’ve never seen any like this before. Did you know that stones can have zippers incorporated into them? I didn’t either until I saw this collection. I know at first glance, you might think these are photoshopped images, but they aren’t. As a matter of fact, artist Hirotoshi Itoh collects stones near the river by his home to create these.
When you see the stones that sport those grins full of teeth, you might be creeped out at first, but then you’ll start smiling. That is what Hirotoshi’s goal is – to bring a smiles and giggles to all who see his work. I wonder how long it takes for him to create each one of these.
I didn’t even know that a stone could be manipulated like this. I cannot figure out how he does this, but it’s fabulous art for sure. He has been an artist is whole life, and he’s been working with stones for many years, so it makes sense that he would find a way to do what others might think is impossible. I hope one day he posts a video to show the process. I’m thinking he must have to use some heavy duty tools. The coin purse design (7th picture below) makes it look like there are some clean cuts made in the stone itself. But then again, it could all be an illusion. You can learn more about Hirotoshi on his website or his deviantART page. Those teeth look so real to me!
