The Art of Animation by Johnny Kelly

Animation is an art form.  It allows us to think and feel beyond where our imaginations can take us.  I was watching some footage of cool animations when I stumbled onto the works of Johnny Kelly.  I checked out some of his work and was amazed at his talent.  I also discovered that he is a past Young Guns Winner!  (ADC Young Guns), and to be quite honest, I wouldn’t be surprised. Aside from directing animated shorts for Nexus Productions, the guy also weaves magic via his illustrations.  You can see most of his works HERE.  His portfolio includes great pieces that have already toured the art and design scene.  I particularly loved his renditions of sketches that he has already turned into animated features.

I also included his work here the Seed, which he did for Adobe.  I love the way he used illustration with 2D effect.  The story is simple and complimented the visuals.  Plus there is a glimpse of how it was made.  Watch the videos and tell me what you think.

SEED – A two-minute animated voyage through nature’s life cycle, following the trials and tribulations of a humble apple seed. The film was kindly funded by Adobe, made using their CS4 range of software. It was produced at Nexus Productions and features a soundtrack by Jape. It was made using a mixture of stop motion papercraft and 2D drawn animation.
