Unusual Hotels: The Underground Cozy Cave Hotel In Sweden

There are so many unusual and interesting hotels in the world, and I think it would be a lot of fun to take a trip around the world, visit all my social media friends, and stay in these wildly unique hotels. Sweden seems to be a place with a lot of these kind of places. I stumble across them often. I just read about an underwater hotel there a few weeks ago, and today I want to share with you a different Swedish treasure.

This is the Sala Silvermine hotel in Vdstmanland County, Sweden. The penthouse suite in this hotel isn’t on the top floor like most hotels; it’s 509 feet (155 meters) below the ground in a cave, and it’s only accessible by a mine lift shaft. When I first read about this, I thought maybe it was a whole vampire-thing, but it doesn’t seem to be that way. It’s more about just providing a one-of-a-kind hotel experience down in a cold dark cave where there is no phone reception (There’s no tweeting down there? That’s it; I’m out).

It took almost ten years just to carve out the bedroom in this cave, but now it stays booked solid with reservations every weekend for a year in advance. Supposedly these accommodations truly have the wow factor. Once you are in the room, your only contact with the outside world is through an intercom radio. However, I did read that they deliver room service down there. Heeeeey! If I did the conversion correctly, the cost of this room is about $600 a night.

If you are in the mood to take a trip, here are some other fun hotels to check out:
The snowy Igloo Hotel in Finland
Sleep in an outdoor drainage tube in Mexico
Become a superhero in a Chinese batman hotel room
Get freaky deaky in a Japanese love hotel
