In the world of Iron Man 3, Tony Stark is stalked by reporters every time he’s out in public. Journalists will capture the iconic fictional billionaire superhero with whatever device they have available at the time, including cell phones. What they don’t expect is for the cell phone in their hands to change mid-interview. That’s exactly what happens in the most recent trailer for the movie.
This is the darkest of the trailers for what appears to be the darkest of the four movies featuring Tony Stark (Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers). The character, played by Robert Downey Jr., does not smile throughout the trailer, a shift from the wisecracks that filled the previous three.
At the 1:52 mark in the trailer, he stares into a flip phone held by a reporter and says, “I’m not afraid of you.”
It cuts to some action scenes, a view of Stark being prepared for an operation of some sort, and a gratuitous teaser of Gwyneth Paltrow in a skimpy top, during which Stark says, “No politics here…” At this point, it cuts back to the same interview from a slightly different angle with Stark finishing the line by adding, “… just good old fashioned revenge.”
The flip phone that Tony Stark had been staring into has been upgraded to what appears to be a Samsung Galaxy S2. It’s definitely the same hand and the same interview, but the phone is clearly a different one. Screen captures of the HD version of the trailer are below.
Trailers are often pulled together from all available footage and editing for the sake of continuity is neglected. We can assume that the spontaneous mobile upgrade will be corrected for the final cut, but take note of it now and remember it when you see the movie. Iron Man 3 is scheduled for US release on May 3rd, 2013.
