What Is POWERBALL©?
POWERBALL© is a prominent Lottery game with substantial jackpots that you may have seen make news headlines due to their potential life-changing amounts.
The concept is straightforward. You pick five numbers from one to 69, plus one red POWERBALL© number from one to 26. Matching them all results in the jackpot prize, but there are eight other ways to try and win smaller prizes.
With three weekly drawings on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings, you’ll have multiple opportunities to try your chances.
How To Take Part
For $2, you can purchase a POWERBALL© ticket at any West Virginia Lottery retailer. If you’re undecided about the numbers you want, the “Quick Pick” option will generate random selections for you.
You can also purchase tickets from your phone or computer through the West Virginia Lottery’s official iLottery platform, iPlay. Your digital ticket is stored securely in your account, and you’ll receive notifications about any matching numbers should you land them.
The Power Play option
For an additional $1, you can add the Power Play option. This multiplies any non-jackpot prize you might win.
For example, if you match four white balls plus the POWERBALL©—that would be a $50,000 win—with Power Play and a 5x multiplier drawn that night, the prize becomes $250,000. That’s a substantial difference in potential winnings.
The multiplier is randomly selected before each draw (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or sometimes 10x when jackpots are under a certain amount). Note that it doesn’t apply to the jackpot itself.
Prize Structure
POWERBALL© has nine different ways to win, starting from just matching the red POWERBALL© number ($4) all the way up to the full jackpot when you match all six numbers.
If you play online and win a prize, smaller amounts are credited directly to your account. For larger winnings, you may need to visit in person and provide identification verification.
Accessing Results
After each drawing, the results are posted on the West Virginia Lottery website and app. You can enable notifications in your online account to receive updates automatically.
Note that each ticket is only valid for the specific draws you purchased. If you’re playing for multiple draws in advance, verify those dates before submission.
Responsible Gameplay
The West Virginia Lottery provides several safeguards for online play:
- You can set deposit limits that align with your budget
- Turn on session reminders for notifications about the time spent gaming
- Self-exclusion options allow you to take breaks when needed
- Account dashboards display your history and patterns
These features will help you try your chances safely and responsibly.
Remember, draw games are chance-based, meaning there is no way to guarantee or predict an outcome.
