Animators always try to reinvent themselves and come up with never before seen concepts of animation. More often than not, it’s just a copy of something else. Every now and then, there comes along an animation that is edgy and new. As some would probably say, it just all depends on what you like and what you don’t like. The fact remains that there is something cool, yet disturbing, about the style that this artist represents.
Andreas Hykade must have been high on cough medicine or something when he, together with Heiko Maile, created this somewhat tripped out animation meant for the NFB Online Contest. Creating an interconnected animation isn’t exactly the easiest task and doing it with famous characters, real or fiction, must be a heck of a lot harder. Why they named it “Love & Theft” is beyond me, but then again, maybe I wasn’t taking enough cough medicine when I watched it.
Some people suggest this is some kind of propaganda instead of a contribution for a contest. I guess it’s up to the viewer to decide. The imagery can be quite offensive to some people, while entertaining to others. Whichever side you decide to take, I am sure of one thing: If you’ve never felt dizzy after an animation before… this is the one to get you there. There is plenty of creativity and plenty of ’70s trip out flavor.
