Hipster Style: Alphabet Design & Language Translator Chart

It seems like hipsters have gotten a bit of a bad rap lately. Even the urban dictionary, which is a place where trends are usually celebrated, talks about hipsters like they are sub-humans. One definition describes them as “a shallow subculture of teens and young adults that shows how the worst of human tendencies to seek some kind of dominance over one another even stoops down to the most mundane subjects like tastes in music and fashion.” I’ve also heard hipster style described as people who dress like they are creative (skinny jeans, fitted hoodies, vintage glasses), but they don’t actually create anything.

I’m not a big fan of people with elitist attitudes, so the whole hipster style of communicating with the world really isn’t my thing. I would much rather hang out with a humble fun geek than a well-dressed know-it-all hipster. Opps, did I just type that? Some people love the hipster style and culture, and South African illustrator Emma Cook must be one of them. She created an entire hipster alphabet for the next generation of hipster wannabes. Just work your way from A – Z, and you’ll learn what the typical hipster style is all about.

If after that you are still a little fuzzy about what a hipster is, I put two additional tidbits below to help you. One is a hilarious hipster translator chart which will help you determine what hipsters say vs. what they mean. And, the other is a video made by a girl who moved from France to New York City a year ago. She couldn’t grasp the concept of being a hipster, and you can learn about it with her in that very funny video. To all you hipsters out there, we loooove you. This is all just in good fun, but you knew that already, right? After all, you’re a hipster.
