iPads To Replace Textbooks In Some Schools!

If you are a parent like me, you know that sooner or later you will have an “I remember when…” story to tell your child. Of course, my mother’s story went something like, “I remember walking for two miles in the snow just to get to the bus stop.” Okay Mom, I get it that I had it easier growing up than you did.

Well, I think I have just found the story I will tell my son. I will say to him, “I remember when we had to use books in school.” He will probably roll his eyes at me, like I did to my mother when I was younger, and life goes on, right?

California is experimenting with using iPads in the classroom instead of algebra textbooks. How awesome is that? According to John Sipe, VP of K-12 sales in one California school district, “This is a seminal moment. It marks the foundation shift from print delivery of curriculum to digital.”

They’ve decided to divide the students into two groups. One group will have iPads loaded with all the latest learning goodies including tutorials, videos, a digital homework coach, note taking apps, animated instructions, etc… The second group will have the old fashioned books.

At the end of the testing period, each group’s progress will be tracked and compared. I can’t help but wonder if they will be allowed to install a Twitter app. Now that would provide some real world learning! Hmm… I feel sorry for the kids who aren’t lucky enough to be in the iPad group. That would seriously suck.
